Google is currently testing a new feature within the Chrome browser aimed at accelerating the browsing experience, particularly for heavy pages containing multimedia elements such as video and audio. This step is part of the development of Chrome 148, which is expected to be released to users in mid-April.

The update introduces an expansion of the “lazy loading” concept to video and audio files, a feature previously supported for images and iframe elements only. This mechanism works by deferring the loading of elements that fall outside the user’s immediate view. Instead of downloading the entire page content immediately upon opening, the browser loads only essential elements first. Subsequently, additional content is fetched gradually as the user scrolls down to it.

Extending lazy loading to media files represents a significant improvement, as video and audio are typically the most data-intensive components of a webpage. By downloading these files only when necessary, the browser reduces network strain and data consumption. This is particularly beneficial for users with limited or slow internet connections, as it prevents the browser from consuming resources for content the user may never reach.

The feature is expected to be available to all users upon the official launch of Chrome 148 and will cover both desktop and mobile operating systems, including Android and iOS. Furthermore, the update includes enhancements for the browser’s split-screen functionality. Developers are working on relocating the toggle for this feature to a more accessible location within the context menu and adjusting the sensitivity of drag-and-drop actions used to activate it. These changes aim to make the split-screen tool more intuitive and easier to use in daily browsing scenarios.
