Google Play suspended the Palestinian-Australian social media platform UpScrolled on Saturday, February 14, before restoring it on Sunday, February 15. The application, launched by Isam Hijazi in June 2025, experienced rapid user growth, increasing from approximately 150,000 to millions within a single week.

The suspension was attributed to the sudden surge in traffic that overwhelmed content moderation systems, leading to the failure to control specific content. Reports from various media outlets had previously criticized the platform for not effectively managing “hate speech” and extremist material. Google Play responded with a sarcastic comment noting the suspension coincided with Valentine’s Day.

UpScrolled stated that they worked closely with Google Play to resolve technical issues and compliance requirements. The company also announced the expansion of its moderation team and the development of advanced systems to filter illegal content while preserving freedom of expression. The restoration addressed server overloads caused by the heavy download volume. The platform now faces the challenge of transforming into a global competitor for platforms like Facebook and TikTok.
