Mindseye, the ambitious project by Build a Rocket Boy aiming to deliver a cinematic action-adventure experience, ultimately fails to meet its own high expectations. The game falls short across narrative, gameplay mechanics, and technical performance.

The story follows Jacob Diaz, a soldier with amnesia caused by a chip implant, as he fights against corporations utilizing advanced AI to control humanity. Despite this intriguing setup, the narrative is criticized for being cliché, shallow, and lacking character depth. Protagonist Jacob is described as boring and unrelatable, while villains are one-dimensional. The writing is repetitive, and the execution feels lazy.

In contrast, the game’s setting, Redrock, receives praise. The developers successfully created a realistic near-future city with recognizable architecture and modern surveillance technology, avoiding the typical cyberpunk aesthetic.

However, the gameplay suffers from significant issues. The world lacks environmental physics, with police forces remaining passive and driving restricted to rigid paths. The combat relies on a cover system that fails due to poor enemy AI; enemies are predictable and easily defeated, making the tactical elements redundant. Missions are repetitive and linear, with side quests feeling disconnected and generic.

Technically, the game is poorly optimized. Even on powerful hardware like an RTX 3080 or 4070, the frame rate fluctuates between 45 and 60 FPS, often stuttering. 4K resolution performs worse, dropping to 30-40 FPS. Mid-range hardware also struggles, with frame drops below 35 FPS in crowded areas. Issues such as memory management, pop-in, and unstable lighting further degrade the experience, suggesting the game was released before it was fully polished.
