Apple officially announced the MacBook Neo, marking the introduction of the most affordable laptop in its lineup. The device features a 13-inch display with a resolution of 2408 by 1506 and a brightness of 500 nits. Despite its small size, the laptop weighs only 1.2 kg. However, the keyboard lacks backlighting and TouchID functionality.

Under the hood, the MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip, the same processor found in the iPhone 16 Pro. Apple claims the device offers 50% faster performance for daily browsing and three times the speed for AI tasks compared to a Core 5 Ultra Windows laptop. While this comparison is significant, actual performance benchmarks remain to be seen.

The laptop comes with 8GB of RAM, which may limit future use. Connectivity options include one USB-C port, one USB-3 port, one USB-2 port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Notably, the device lacks MagSafe charging support.

Available in four colors—Silver, Indigo, Pink, and Yellow—the MacBook Neo starts at $599 for the 256GB model and reaches $699 for the 512GB version. Pre-orders are currently open, with shipping scheduled for March 11. While the device offers a good mix for students, the absence of MagSafe and keyboard backlighting raises questions about its overall value. The key question remains whether the smartphone chip can truly outperform Windows laptops in the same price range.
